Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is the most widely grown type of millet. It is called vajra (Hindi ), . sajje (Kannada), sajja (Telugu) and kanbu (Tamil). It has been grown in Africa and the Indian subcontinent since prehistoric times. The center of diversity, and suggested area of domestication, for the crop is in the Sahel zone of West Africa. Major Bajra production states in India are Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. Bajra can also be used as valuable animal fodder. It is one of the major crops of China, India, South Eastern Asia, Sudan, Pakistan, Arabia, Russia & Nigeria. In India, the top sajje/bajra-producing state is Rajasthan followed by Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. The top high-yielding state is Tamil Nadu. Niacin present in sajje helps to reduce cholesterol and magnesium helps to lower blood pressure, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks. The high fiber content helps in keeping blood glucose level normal, weight loss and to cure stomach ulcers and gallbladder stones.
